Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) refers to the use of technology to manage and exchange health-related data and information in healthcare settings. HIT involves the use of systems such as electronic health records (EHR), medical billing software, and more to improve the quality, efficiency, and safety of healthcare delivery.

Healthcare Information Technology Specialists are responsible for managing, supporting, and optimizing IT systems within healthcare organizations. Some responsibilities can include, but aren’t limited to:

• Implementing and maintaining EHR systems
• Data security
• Troubleshooting and support

Healthcare IT (HIT) focuses on the technical side of healthcare systems, confirming that the hardware, software, and infrastructure are in place and functioning properly. It includes managing EHR systems, supporting healthcare applications, and securing patient data.

Health Informatics, on the other hand, is the interdisciplinary field that deals with the collection, analysis, and use of healthcare data to improve patient care. Health informatics professionals work with data scientists and healthcare providers to interpret data and use it to improve healthcare outcomes, inform policy, and conduct research.

This program is designed to help students build foundational knowledge in managing patient records, medical coding, healthcare software, and data systems. It combines online learning with in-person support to help prepare students for entry-level roles in healthcare settings like hospitals, clinics, and administrative offices.

The program is offered in a hybrid format, with most coursework delivered online. This gives you the flexibility to complete assignments and access course materials from home, while also providing opportunities for hands-on learning support when needed.

 In the Health Information program, you’ll build the skills needed to work with medical records and healthcare data. You’ll learn how to:

• Identify proper documentation requirements for health records
• Organize and manage healthcare data according to industry standards
• Maintain privacy, confidentiality, and ethical practices in handling health information

This training prepares you to support the healthcare system by managing information that is critical to patient care and compliance.

Yes. Many students in this program are working adults or parents. The online learning format allows you to study during times that work best for you early mornings, evenings, or weekends. The program is designed with flexibility in mind, but it still requires consistent effort and time management.

You’ll need to review specific exam requirements for certifications such as the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) independently.

The associate degree program typically takes about 18 months to complete, depending on your pace and course load. Classes begin every 5 to 10 weeks, so you can start when you’re ready.

While this program does not guarantee employment, it may help prepare you for entry-level roles such as health information technician, medical records coordinator, coding assistant, or administrative support roles in healthcare organizations.
